Today, we are on the topic of crankshaft sensor.

Crankshaft sensor? What exactly is it? Many of us are car owners with minimal knowledge about automotive and engineering, therefore we may be unaware about the uses, symptoms and causes of a faulty crankshaft sensor.
As part of our routine weekly article, we are going to help you better understand the various vehicle components available in your vehicle.
Crankshaft Sensor
The crankshaft sensor is a vehicle engine management component which helps to assist the rotation speed , sends signals to the electronic control unit (ECU) which will enable the vehicle to perform at its desired performance at different conditions

The crankshaft sensor is a vital component in the engine which helps to ensure that calculations and accurate signals are provided to the control unit for the smooth movement of the vehicle.
Root Cause of the problem
Primarily, there are two issues that result in a faulty crankshaft sensor. They are often due to an overheated engine or alternatively, linked to circuit issues that directly relate to loose wirings, high voltage etc.

What are the common symptoms of a failing Crankshaft Sensor?

Issues Starting the Vehicle
One of the primary symptoms of a failing crankshaft sensor would be the difficulty igniting the vehicle or intermittent issues relating to starting the vehicle.

Stalling Issues
If your vehicles are stalling periodically, there is another high possibility that there is serious issues with the crankshaft sensor. This can be related to other issues such as wirings that are loose, but a fairly amount of probability is to relate it to a faulty crankshaft sensor.

Engine Light is On
Another significant sign of a faulty crankshaft sensor is the engine check light being on. When having this sign, using an electronic fault scan done by a mechanic will definitely help to narrow down the exact root cause of the issue.

Uneven Acceleration
Due to the inaccurate measurement and information provided by the faulty crankshaft sensor, the engine control unit cannot make the necessary adjustments to the exact timing and injection when the speed increase. This may result in uneven acceleration and inaccuracy making it difficult to maintain a speed.

Reduced Mileage
A lack in timing information from the various sensors will result it the vehicle not being able to pump gas into the engine so efficiently. It will contribute more gas it need on shorter drive and you may realised that more gas is required to fuel your vehicle.
Cost of Replacing Crankshaft sensor

The typical cost of replacing a crankshaft sensor is approximately $40-$95 (Depending on the variant and make)
The cost of labour involved for the job by a professional mechanic ranges between $35-$75 which includes a professional diagnostic service
Conclusion
A proper and functional crankshaft sensor is required for the vehicle to be functional and performing at its optimal level. Issues arising with the crankshaft sensor can result in problems that affect the drivability and movement of the vehicle.
If you suspect that your crankshaft sensor is faulty, get a professional mechanic to do a proper check or if you are confident that it may be the root cause, get it replaced immediately.
