Transmission filter... Is changing necessary?

We all know the importance of changing our transmission fluid, or rather known as "Automatic Transmission Fluid" (ATF in short).

However, less have known that the transmission filter should be regularly replaced together as well.

So, what exactly is the transmission filter?

The transmission filter, like any other filter in the vehicle, is aim to helping you keep out contaminants within the vehicle components itself. For the case of the transmission filter, it is aimed at keeping contaminants away from your transmission fluid, which in turns prevent contaminants from entering your gearbox.

Particularly, these contaminants comes from the various valves, springs and balls. If not filtrated properly, can cause harm to your components, causing them to stick which will be detrimental to the gearbox itself.

What is a suitable time frame for replacement?

Typically, most automotive manufacturer suggest replacing them every 20,000 - 30,000 miles. (This can be done every 1-2years). Simultaneously, the replacement can take place during the changing of the transmission fluid itself.

Besides the timeframe, what other signs indicate a change is necessary?

Out of the routine replacement, other signs that indicate you need a change may include:

1)Difficulty in changing gears

Finding it hard to change your gears , or feeling it being sticky can be another tell tale sign of a failing transmission filter

2)Weird Noises coming from gearbox or front compartment

Rattling sound may appear from the front which indicates a change is necessary.

3)Contamination (Contaminated fluid, or damaging the internal components)

The transmission filter itself, is made up of sponge like materials in it. After periods of time, these sponge like materials may degenerate and seep into the transmission fluid itself causing contamination (Highly True for most vehicles)

4)Leakage

A broken or loose transmission filter may indicate that it is faulty. Hence, checking it and replacing it is required.

5)Smoke or Burning Smell from Front Compartment

A clogged up filter may cause engine smoke or burning smell...

Cost of Replacing the Entire Transmission Kit

As mentioned, the transmission fluid change is done together with the transmission filter.

The cost of a transmission filter change is approx $45-$75 (For the Parts), and the transmission fluid can range from approx $14-$25 per bottle depending on model and brand.

Our Advice....

It is simple... Change your components at a regular time interval. As for the case of the transmission filter, its not worth saving the money and not replacing them regularly.

As mentioned earlier, a faulty transmission fluid may result in contaminants entering the gearbox and transmission itself. The cost of repair and replacing is beyond what we can imagine.

Hence, we sincerely urge all of you to take preventive maintenance , and change your automotive components prior to them failing! Remember that every automotive parts have a lifespan, and we should all take ownership of our vehicle.
