In a tropical climate city like Singapore, where the weather is always humid and hot, all of us simply cannot live without our air-conditioning.

Hence, it can seriously be a pain in the ass to have a faulty air-con in our car. Today, we will be sharing with you some tips and tricks on how you can detect and resolve faulty airconditioning in the vehicle.

Disclaimer: Although the solution to a faulty air-conditioning may seem easy to resolve, we still advise our clients to get a certified car mechanic to resolve the issue.

In Singapore, we realized that there are two main categories of problem that car owners face with regards to their air-conditioning.

They are the following:

1) AC is not blowing cold air or hot air is blowing out from the vents

Common reasons a car A/C is not cooling

Pertaining to the issue of the A/C not being cool, the most common issue will be a refrigerant leak, an electrical climate control issue, or a problem with the air-conditioning compressor. Each of these can cause the AC to blow lukewarm or hot instead of cold air.

ai) AC Refrigerant leak

All of our car air conditioning uses refrigerant, a fluid designed to vaporize at a low temperature, to cool the air before blowing through the vents into the vehicle.

Once the refrigerant is leaking from somewhere in the AC system it will become less effective at cooling the air before it leaves the vents.

A leak like this can be the result of a faulty component within the system, such as the compressor, evaporator or hoses. Or, it can just be a sign of age for an older vehicle, since the parts and hoses use rubber seals that naturally tend to wear over time, causing the refrigerant to leak.

Accidents and other damage can also cause refrigerant leaks. Since the AC condenser is located in front of the radiator, it's susceptible to damage from flying road debris and other small front-end impacts. Another possibility is that AC hoses and pipes can rub against other parts while you drive, eventually causing a leak.

Diagnosing a A/C Refrigerant Leak

The best method to diagnostic of this issue is to listen to the A/C compressor.

There should be a loud "click" sound upon ignition of the vehicle.

How to find out a leak ----

- Listening to a hissing sound

-Look for oil residue from A/C or piping

-Inspecting the condensor for damage (in front of the radiator)

Issue 2: Climate Control Electrical Issue

Buttons, knobs and control screen is required to adjust the temperature - A/C control of your vehicle.

Just like many other household switches, this part can fail for many reasons, hence properly diagnostics is required.

Moving on, lets better understand why no air is flowing through the vent

Air flow is created by the blower motor, and is passed throught the flaps.

The air flow can be not fluent due to:

Blower Motor: It is an electronically controlled fan which blows air to cool the inner vehicle. The motor may fail due to a system failure. Replacement is necessary.

Clogged Air Cabin Filter: Air Cabin Filter helps to filtrate the dirty pollutants in the air. Removing the pollutants is necessary, through a clean Air Cabin Filter, hence we need to replace the Air Cabin Filter on a constant basis.
